canning jarsDiscover the lost art of canning. It was something that our grandparents and their parents before them did out of necessity. Cindy from the PennState Extension will be demonstrating how to make the most out of your garden this year. She will show you how to enjoy your bountiful crops all year long, so in the winter you have fresh tasting veggies and fruits.

She will be going step by step through the canning process, from sterilizing the jars to labeling your finished product.  The class begins at 11 am on Saturday July 17th.

The cost of the class is $5.00. This includes a take home kit to get you started on your canning journey.

Please RSVP by  June 14th so we have the right amount of supplies.

Celebrate the local flavors of  summer with us on JULY 10th. We will be cooking corn and other locally grown veggies on the grill along with samplings of our delicious dip mixes and marinades. After you are done enjoying some food and drink stroll around and admire the  local women making jewerly and throwing clay. Both Shelly Cubanney and Collen Harmon have their works for sale in our Glass House. The Colonello women will be onsite gracing us with their beautiful music once agian.

All this and we are also having a past bloom sale on our Perennials and Shrubs.

So bring the family and enjoy a day of food, drink, arts, and plants all while supporting the Local Flavors.

dscn2652Not only is it better for enviroment  to practice sustianable gardening it is easier for you, the homeowener! "Right plant, right place" is a gardening tip that all should follow but so few do. It means read the care tags or ask us and find the correct plant for your needs. For example- Hemlock trees, I can not tell you how many of these trees I see dying  or dead in peoples yards. They are a woodland tree they tend to grow in shady places along creeks or rivers, yet poeple plant them in full sun out in the middle of there yards. Therefore they end up wasting water and fertilizers to keep it alive. We realize it can be a tricky task finding the correct plant material, ask us that is why we are here!

Along the same lines of picking out the right plant for the right spot, buying native plants can go along way to gardening sustainably. We are on Phipps Conservatories list of garden centers that carry their Top Ten Sustainable Plants. They come out with a new list every year on there favorite native plants. The list includes both perennials and shrubs that require little care once established. The less you have to water, fertilize or spray pesticides the closer you are getting to gardening green!

Master Gardener Susan Parker will be here to teach Sustainable Gardening on Saturday, May 22nd.

dsc_0896Gardening used to be a way of life, a necessity, not very long ago. People used to know and understand where their food came from, because they grew it right outside there back door. I beleive that many people are going back to that, but as always with a twist. Not everyone has an abudance of space for a large vegetable garden, therefore many are turning to container gardening. Also many people are trying to do it sustainably, by not using pesticides or fertilizers. Even more people want to do this but do not know where to start, as always we are here to help!

We are joining up with the Penn State Extension and the Master Gardener  Martha Swiss to tell you all the ways to grow your best vegetables, fruits and herbs! Martha will be teaching the class on Saturday April 17th, at 10 a.m. The class will be around 45 mins to an hour depending on how many questions you all have.
